TinyMUSH/Mac 0.5.1d1 fixes major bugs, adds help indexing

Hello there, everyone!

This is a letter I'm sending to those who have indicated an interest in TinyMUSH/Mac. If you do not wish to receive these mailings, please let me know and I'll remove you from the list. Likewise, if you or another is not on the list but wishes to be, let me know and I'll add you.

This list is just that -- a list of addresses. It is not administered by a mailbot, and replies to the sending address go to me only, not to the list.

New Provider

I have signed up with a new service provider, with several consequences: My preferred email address is now <wanderer@gslink.com>. You should not send mail to the idsonline address. My new web site is at <http://www.gslink.com/~wanderer/>. I'm still undecided on the directory structure, so your best bet is to bookmark the front page and use a link from there to get to the TinyMUSH/Mac page. The GeoCities site is still around, but I intend to phase it out, and have ceased updating the TinyMUSH/Mac page there.

The new addresses will work as long as I stay with my new provider. I am registering my own domain, and when the process is complete I will use that for my canonical address, which will remain valid across providers.

By the way, you'll no doubt be happy to know that my provider, GSLink, has configured their server to recognize tinymush-mac.sit as a StuffIt archive. In short: No more downloading hassles!

TinyMUSH/Mac Upgrade: 0.5.1d1

Perhaps the version increment should have been larger, but what's done is done...

By replacing unix's alarm() signaling with normal polling (based on TickCount() now, but maybe clock() later), I have not only eradicated the sporadic disconnections (I think -- I need you to test it), but failed connections (such as the second of two concurrent attempts) only cause one error message. Please, tell me the nightmare is over.

The previous release introduced index files for help and news; now welcome the indexer! MakeIndex is a clean, user-friendly port of the same mkindx that shipped with the original MUSH 2.0.8-p10. In fact, the original source file remains intact, and Finder drag-and-drop and scriptability were added around it. So, you can add topics to your heart's content, and Startmush will run MakeIndex the next time around.

Also new in this release are subdirectories for the .txt and .indx files (though you could already do this -- I've just done it for you), and Finder icons for Netmush and MakeIndex. Let me know what you think -- if you think you can produce better icons than I did, I'd be delighted for you to show that it's indeed the case.

The Future

The future's up to you! Your feedback helps determine what you'll find in the next download. I have my own ideas, but I want yours. I want to know what you want added or want fixed. I need your perspective on this as I'm not actually trying to host a game (I don't have that much time!) -- you're the ones who are finding flaws, discovering defects, rooting out ruts, and agonizing about my alliteration. :) Just as you depend on me to fix these problems, I depend on you to report them. Not just the bugs in what's there, but the absence of what's not -- tell me what you think is missing, what you wish were present.

I plan to give credit for bug reports and other assistance in the next release -- once again, let me know if you wish to be mentioned and if you want your email address printed as well. (I will not print addresses without permission.)

Thanks for joining me in this quest. Best of luck to everyone!

Josh

=)
